so i am finishing up preparations to leave for the peace corps this week. i am departing newark on monday, 2/23/09, at 6:00 a.m. and arriving miami at 9:00 a.m. here, my fellow volunteers and i will have our staging event, a brief introduction to peace corps service. from here we will be traveling to st. lucia for pre-service training (PST - get used to the abbreviations, there are many) until 3/2/09 when we will all go to our islands in the eastern caribbean to continue on with six more weeks of training. i will be living with a host family for all of training and the first two weeks of my service placement.
my placement is as a youth developer. as far as what exactly i will be doing, i'm not sure. this will depend upon the needs of the community into which i will be placed, but in general terms i will be working with an at-risk youth population promoting leadership and healthy lifestyle choices.
hopefully i will have fairly reliable internet access during my time with the peace corps and i will be able to update this fairly regularly. also depending on the internet, i hope to have a skype connection. my skype name is dream8817 (same as AIM) so i'd love to stay in touch with you all this way if i can, too.

I took Alicia to Newark airport this morning for her flight. (She made all the luggage weight requirements!) After saying goodbye I watched and waited for her to go through security. She looked back, waved, and before I knew it she was gone... She should be in Miami by now...
