i was finishing up "astrid and veronika" by linda olsson (swedish novel brought to me courtesy of anne) this morning and there was about half a line where two of the characters were drinking orange juice and champagne. suddenly it was feb. 22nd, the day before i left, and i was having sunday brunch at marina grille with rob and my parents. we all drove in the minivan and it was so cold, my mittens insufficient. we ate so much and i was feeling the 3 or so mimosas. i can't tell you what we talked about, but i know we laughed and that i was full and warm.
today, i was overwhelmed by how simultaneously happy and sad this made me.
last night, i raked dirt to build the foundation of the seventh day adventist church. the moon was full and bright, creating rainbow halos around the clouds filled with water. then it would rain. the workers were able to rest. then it would stop long enough for some small progress to be made, but because it is the rainforest, it wouldn't be long till it started again. there is so much work to be done and only the small congregation funding and providing the labor. people seem upbeat about it though to me it seemed so daunting.
there's been a little yellow bird that's been trying SO HARD to get into my house the last few days. all morning and most of the afternoon i hear it tapping, flying full speed ahead at the panes. it seems to follow me, whichever room i'm in. i have to keep my screens closed because, based on the intelligence level of this bird, i know it'd never find its way back out if it ever succeeded in getting in. so anyway, thinking that yellow is a happy color, i wondered if a yellow bird trying to get into your house meant anything as far as superstitious symbolism goes. i googled it. all this nice stuff about the bird representing the soul, the ability to fly, achieve, etc. then i get to a part specifically about birds flying into windows: "One of the most common signs of such negative omens relate to birds flying in and out of rooms/windows. This action is seen as a sign of an imminent death, whilst the flight or hovering of a bird around a house or the tapping against a window are seen to indicate negative forces and perhaps death is close." NOT what i was looking for. apparently this is a pretty common superstition, but new to me.
luckily, i'm not superstitious.
Okay, this does not bode well for me. A few months after moving into my apt in the city (so I guess that was awhile ago)... a PIGEON (NOT a nice little yellow bird but a greasy headed dirty city pigeon)attempted to fly into my apartment. I saw it out of the corner of my eye- heading right through the open window. I ran and dove and slammed the window shut and bam the PIGEON SMACKED into the window. Now that cant possibly be good for my future. Maybe you should adopt the little guy. Miss and love u! Britt
