for instance, did i really not write about thanksgiving? we went to a pcv's house on the west coast and it was a very nice day filled with good company and good food. our wall turkey with things we're all thankful for and our actual turkey:
this weekend, two PCVs from st. lucia visited. we went to victoria falls out east which was a beautiful hike. the trail is basically up the river to the waterfall, so we had a lot of river crossings and rock scrambles, some of my favorite things to do while hiking. the waterfall itself is one of the tallest (if not the tallest) in dominica with a beautiful pool at the base where we bathed. the water was cold with lots of waves and the spray from the falls was so strong it was hard to look at the waterfall and it was totally exhilarating.
we tried to go to sari sari falls after, but these pretty vines in the water distracted us and we just lost the trail. we turned around as it was starting to get dark.
then, yesterday, i played tour guide to boiling lake. michelle and the two visitors and i headed up at 7 a.m. when we started the trail, it began to rain. then it started to pour. the trail was a muddy mess, but this isn't so unusual. however, about an hour in, we reached a river crossing. the river was huge. we could not find a way across. even if we'd been able to get across, there's no way that we'd make it back 3 hours later if it kept raining like that. we were soaking and freezing and didn't want to get ourselves into trouble, so we decided to turn around.
work wise, things are very busy. bidiesel is up in the air, been having meetings, maybe it will happen, maybe it won't, but it's causing enough grief in my life as is. very importantly, i'm trying to plan staff training sessions for the week after christmas. this is the most important thing at oyq i think, so i'd like to devote a lot of time to it, but that hasn't happened yet. the school library is a total mess and i really need to get it organized and somehow convince everyone it's a space to be treasured, not a dump site for all unwanted things. i have one more grad school application to do. w/ peace corps, we are starting to plan for the 50th anniversary of peace corps early next year. on a more fun but equally obligatory note, i have to organize christmas stuff to mail home, attend my host sister's wedding, friend's birthday party, cook and bake for christmas gifts and christmas party, possibly swing a weekend getaway, and go to a huge concert on boxing day (26th). however will i manage?
aside from it being the rainy season, the weather here has been glorious. it gets so cool at night. if i leave the window open a crack, i can sleep with a blanket and wake up to crisp early spring-like mornings.
